Haitian Heritage Month Essay Contest Winners

Many exceptional essays were submitted to the 2021 Haitian Heritage Month Essay Contest by high school students in the School District of Palm Beach County. Ultimately, three winners were chosen for their responses to this year’s writing prompt theme, “explain the major challenges that Haitian and Haitian-American students face in the American education system, and how they can overcome those challenges.”

Congratulations to this year’s contest winners:

• Grace Castelin, 12th grade – Suncoast High School, fifth place.

• Tresean Fortune, 12th grade – Royal Palm Beach Community High School, sixth place.

The first place winner receives an award certificate, a check for $250, and a $50 gift card. For coming in second, the winner gets an award certificate, a check for $150, and a $25 gift card. The third place finisher will receive an award certificate, a check for $100, and a $25 gift card. Fourth, fifth, and sixth place winners will each receive a $50 gift card.

The essay contest first began in 2004 as part of the District’s celebration of Haitian Heritage Month. The goal of the contest is to encourage students to apply their critical thinking and writing skills in exploring important issues.

The contest also aims to increase the self-esteem of Haitian students by promoting their history and culture, encouraging them to conduct historical research about Haiti and its people, and their contributions to the history of the world.

The Haitian Heritage Month activities and essay contest is sponsored by Gaskov Clergé Foundation, Educa Vision Inc., Triple VMC Global Services, Gold Coast Federal Credit Union,  the Haitian American Chamber of Commerce, and the Greenacres restaurant location of Applebee's.
